Does signing a permission slip release the school from liability if my child gets hurt?
Not on its own. A permission slip mainly documents that a parent consents to the trip and understands its general risks — that isn't the same as a liability waiver. Many states also limit how far a parent can waive a minor's right to bring a claim, which is why schools often pair the slip with a separate waiver and medical-authorization form. This is general information rather than legal advice, and what holds up varies from state to state.
Who actually has to sign — does it have to be a parent or legal guardian?
Because minors usually can't give legally effective consent for themselves, the slip should be signed by a parent or someone with legal guardianship, such as a court-appointed guardian or foster parent. A student who is 18 or older can typically sign their own. If custody or guardianship is unclear, confirm who holds authority before the trip. Rules differ by jurisdiction, so treat this as general guidance and not a legal opinion.
Can a parent cancel permission after they've already signed?
Generally yes. Consent to a trip usually isn't irreversible — a parent can withdraw it beforehand by telling the school in writing, and that student simply stays behind. It's good practice to keep both the signed slip and any later cancellation so your records show the full picture. Local policies vary, so take this as general information only.
Do both parents need to sign, or is one enough?
In most cases a signature from one parent or guardian who has legal authority is enough. The exception is shared-custody situations, where a custody order may require both parents to agree or name which parent decides on activities like this. When you're unsure, the safest move is to check the custody arrangement. None of this is a substitute for advice from a lawyer who knows your circumstances.
If a parent signs online, how do I prove they really gave consent?
